From manual verification to governed enterprise intelligence
Financial institutions manage decisions that demand speed, accuracy, and control. Credit teams must examine borrower information and risk indicators carefully while employees across the organisation need timely access to approved internal policies. When those activities depend heavily on manual review or repeated internal inquiries, valuable specialist time is absorbed by information retrieval rather than judgement.
Ecobank Uganda engaged Otic to explore how agentic AI could reduce this friction without compromising institutional governance. The engagement combined capability enablement with the development of two working prototypes: a credit analysis agent and an HR policy agent.
The challenge
Credit analysis required teams to bring together borrower information and assess relevant risk factors through a process containing significant manual verification. At the same time, recurring HR policy questions created an internal response burden and slowed employees seeking guidance. The opportunity was not simply to introduce another standalone AI tool. Ecobank needed an approach that could operate within its enterprise environment, remain grounded in approved information, and be governed through the bank's existing controls.
The intervention
Otic delivered a focused agentic AI capability programme for 12 participants, led by Ecobank Uganda's Head of Strategy and Enterprise Data Office and its Chief Information Security Officer. The involvement of strategy, data, and security leadership helped position AI as an enterprise capability requiring both business ownership and technical governance.
Using Microsoft Copilot Studio, Otik and the participating team developed and demonstrated two prototypes:
Credit Analysis Agent
This prototype supported borrower analysis and risk assessment by helping users examine relevant information in a more structured way. It was designed to support professional analysis, not replace the bank's credit authority, human judgement, or established approval controls.
HR Policy Agent
The HR prototype was grounded in approved internal HR policies and designed to help employees retrieve policy guidance more efficiently. This demonstrated how governed knowledge agents can reduce repetitive internal inquiries while improving consistency in access to institutional information.
The value created
The engagement established a practical foundation for governed AI adoption inside the bank. It demonstrated how agentic AI can reduce manual information retrieval, support faster preliminary analysis, and redirect employee attention toward higher-value judgement and decision-making.
Executive perspective
Timothy Kiyimba, Head of Strategy and Enterprise Data Office at Ecobank Uganda, emphasised that the strategic question is not simply whether a bank possesses data but whether that data can improve the speed and quality of decisions, strengthen risk oversight, and generate measurable efficiency.
